A man being treated at Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, Pennsylvania has been accused of selling heroin from his hospital bed.

Hospital security officers became suspicious of Jeffery Lakin, 37, after he had several people visit him in his hospital room separately for short periods of time, reports CBS Local.

The officers called police, who later pulled over a man who had just visited Lakin’s room. Heroin was recovered from the man’s car, and police then entered Lakin’s room to conduct a search.

Police say they found Lakin going through a duffel bag in his bathroom and recovered several bags of heroin and $1,000 in cash. Lakin later admitted he was attempting to flush the heroin down the toilet.

“I’ve been a police officer for 28 years now and with heroin, nothing surprises me anymore,” Greensburg Police Captain Robert Stafford says.

Westmoreland Hospital officials released a statement saying in part that they were happy that staff members felt empowered enough to speak up when they noticed suspicious behavior.

Lakin faces multiple drug charges and is being held in Westmoreland County Jail on $11,000 cash bond.
