Investigators now believe they have a “significant break” in the unsolved murder of a Virginia Tech student.
The Virginia State Police found new forensic evidence in the old case while investigating the disappearance of 18-year-old Hannah Graham, who was last seen on Sept. 13 after attending a party. Graham is a University of Virginia student, the AP reports.
Last week, police made an arrest in the Graham case. Jesse L. Matthew Jr., 32, was charged with abduction with intent to defile. Leading up to the arrest, police had searched Martin’s car and home and removed items they considered to be evidence. State police have not provided any information about what was found, but they have said they uncovered new forensic evidence that may link Graham’s disappearance to the unsolved murder of 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.
Harrington disappeared in 2009 after attending a Metallica concert. A farmer discovered her remains three months later in an Albermarle County hayfield.
The new evidence uncovered by police may also help solve a 2006 sexual assault case in Fairfax City as FBI had previously said the DNA from Harrington’s attacker matched the DNA of the person who committed the sexual assault.
