UPDATE: An “all clear” message was sent to students and employees was issued more than four hours after the search began.
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus was put on lockdown for four hours on Tuesday after multiple eyewitnesses spotted a possible gunman on the grounds.
A student contacted police around 12:30 p.m., after seeing a man in a long brown coat carrying a weapon in a campus parking lot near the Indiana University School of Medicine. At 12:55 p.m., IUPUI police issued an alert via text message and Twitter telling all students and staff to seek shelter, according to The Christian Post. At least two other people reported seeing the gunman on campus.
The Indiana University School of Medicine, University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children, as well as a nearby high school and the NCAA headquarters were all locked down, the Associated Press reports.
Police lifted the lockdown after searching every parking lot and building on campus. They were not able to find anyone matching the possible gunman’s description.
