Police: S.C. High School Bombing Plot Foiled

Published: April 20, 2008

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Police arrested Ryan Schallenberger, 18, April 19 for plotting to bomb Chesterfield High School.

Schallenberger’s parents called police after discovering 10 pounds of ammonium nitrate had been delivered to their home. According to police, the suspect had collected all of the materials needed to make several bombs.

Schallenberger, a senior who had no history of trouble at Chesterfield High, was one of the best students at the school.

Authorities say he kept a journal for more than a year outlining his plans for a suicide attack. The diary also contained maps of the school and indicated he admired the two students responsible for the Columbine tragedy in 1999. Additionally, Schallenberger left an audiotape to be played after the attack.
