Police: Fresno State Fraternity Drinking Death Result of Hazing

Published: October 11, 2012

FRESNO, Calif. — Police are calling the alcohol-related death of a Fresno State University freshman, who died last month at a Theta Chi fraternity party, a hazing incident.

Theta Chi pledge Philip Dhanens, 18, died two weeks into his first semester at the university. Recent court documents stated that Theta Chi members locked pledges into a room with several bottles of alcohol to drink, the Fresno Bee reports. Pledges were told they could not leave the room until they drank all the alcohol.

A coroner’s report noted that Dhanens’ blood alcohol level was) .36 — four to five times the legal limit to drive — at the time of his death.

Theta Chi’s international headquarters in Indianapolis suspended the Fresno State chapter last month.
