Police: ECSU Failed to Check 126 Crime Reports

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) campus police failed to investigate as many as 126 crime reports — including 18 sexual assault reports — dating back to 2007, according to local police.

In an effort to solve the backlog of cases, detectives from the Elizabeth City Police Department (ECPD) are working five days a week, while off-duty patrol officers are helping with campus security, HamptonRoads.com reports. ECPD plans to keep the officers on campus for two more months.

The latest news comes after ECSU Police Chief Sam Beamon resigned from his position Friday in response to reports that he mishandled a recent assault and sexual battery case. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is currently conducting an investigation into the allegations of obstruction of justice and witness intimidation by campus police.
