AMES, Iowa — A police chase ended Monday on the Iowa State University campus with pedestrians hopping out of the way and officers firing shots at the suspect.

Around 10:17 a.m., the Ames Police Department received a report of a stolen truck. A responding officer located the vehicle and activated his emergency lights in an attempt to get the driver to pull over. Instead, the suspect sped up causing numerous people to jump out of the truck’s way. The truck later jumped the curb onto a grassy area north of the university’s Campanile, KCRG.com reports.

Despite issuing verbal commands to the driver to turn off the vehicle, the suspect refused, prompting a police officer to fire six rounds at the truck. The driver, whose name has not been released, was later pronounced dead at Mary Greeley Medical Center.

ISU officials quickly informed the campus community of the incident.
