A University of Florida student was shot by authorities after he barricaded himself in his on-campus apartment with two weapons. Authorities said he wouldn’t comply with police officers.

Investigators were looking into why 35-year-old Kofi Adu-Brempong was screaming in his apartment when the incident occurred, according to WESH.com. Police said they spent 90 minutes trying to establish a line of communication before they had to force their way inside.

Upon entering the apartment, police found the doctoral student with a knife and a pipe – weapons that were considered lethal to officers. Initially, they used a Taser gun and a bean-bag round to calm him down; however, Adu-Brempong would not back down, officers said. One officer fired two shots, and one round hit the student. Multiple agencies are investigating the shooting.

Adu-Brempong is said to be in serious condition.
