Police Arrest 22 Protesters at N.Y. College

Police arrested 22 people at New School University April 10, after some protesters, calling for the resignation of university president Bob Kerrey, broke into a campus building and occupied it for five hours, according to the Associated Press.

According to the news outlet, 19 students, who also wanted to discuss budget, management issues and a desire for more study space, locked themselves inside a campus building around 5:30 a.m., after knocking out a maintenance man. Around 11 a.m., police responded to calls from school officials. After negotiating with the students for 20 minutes, police were able to make peaceful arrests.

However, police say protesters outside of the building were a bit more rowdy, as some protesters clashed with police and broke through metal barriers. Three people were arrested outside the building.

Protesters inside the building were charged with trespassing. Three of them were also charged with assault for slamming a door on the maintenance man’s leg. One of those three individuals also faces assault with grand larceny charges for stealing the maintenance man’s radio. The three outside protesters face disorderly conduct charges.

School officials said any students who participated in the protest will be suspended.
