AKRON, Ohio — A physician who came face to face with a gunman accused of shooting his wife in the intensive care unit said Akron General Medical Center security “worked as well as can be expected, given that there really is no practice for this.”
Dr. Michael Passero Jr. found himself in the intensive care unit with John Wise, who reportedly shot his wife in the temple on Aug. 4, the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Passero urged Wise to surrender his weapon after Wise pleaded with the doctor, asking if his wife was dead. Friends of Wise said he shot his wife, Barbara, because he didn’t want her to suffer anymore.
Passero said it was clear Wise didn’t intend to shoot bystanders. He spoke calmly to Wise and told him he would help his wife. Two unarmed security guards were able to subdue Wise.
