PHILADELPHIA — For the first time, the Philadelphia School District has hired a woman to serve as its safety chief.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Cynthia Dorsey, 57, who remains a city employee, began working for the district on Monday, Philly.com reports. She replaces Chief Inspector Myron Patterson, who now leads one of the city’s two Regional Operations Command centers.
With Dorsey’s hiring, PSD authorities hope to make schools a safe haven for students, faculty and staff. Although crime trends have declined, safety has always been a concern for district officials. The district cut roughly 91 school police officers from the force this year, leaving 375 officers to monitor 291 schools.
