Philly School District Cuts Ties With 2 Security Firms

Published: May 18, 2008

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia School District terminated contracts equaling more than $1.1 million with two community-based organizations (CBOs).

The two firms, We Overcome and Security Universal were hired to improve security at schools throughout the district. According to the district’s spokesperson Fernando Gallard, the contracts were terminated May 9.

The contract for We Overcome amounted to $703,200, and Security Universal’s contract was worth $459,200. While Gallard refused to cite reasons for the termination, Todd McIntire of Edison School’s Inc., said attorneys told him the contract with We Overcome was canceled because the company had not completed criminal-background checks on its employees. Additionally, in November the district’s chief investigator accused Security Universal of fraud.
