TEMPE, Ariz. – An audit at three of Arizona’s state universities shows there are security problems within its networks.
According to the Arizona Republic, auditors discovered weak security that would allow hackers to change information, install damaging software and take over numerous user accounts.
Auditors recommended that Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University, which serve more than 122,000 students and 25,000 faculty and staff, develop thorough security programs, conduct regular security tests and provide better training for Web developers.
The Web sites contain sensitive information including student records, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers and personal addresses. During one of the audits, state auditors were able to access confidential records of more than 10,000 individuals.
University officials said changes are being made to the systems.
