CHICAGO – Two laptop computers storing approximately 40,000 current and former Chicago Public School (CPS) employee records were stolen April 6.
CPS is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest or the recovery of the laptops. Surveillance cameras captured a suspect wearing a backpack possibly containing the stolen computers leaving the CPS’ downtown headquarters.
CPS officials claim only names and social security numbers of contributors of the Pension Fund between 2003 and 2006 were kept on the computers. These contributors include teachers and administrators alike.
CPS will notify all employees at risk and offer them a year of credit protection.
