Pennsylvania High School Introduces Metal Detectors

Published: September 3, 2008

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. – School entrances at Valley High School in the New Kensington-Arnold School District will now feature metal detectors, according to Valley News Dispatch.

The district is the first in the area to use metal detectors on a regular basis although district officials point out that the detectors will not be used every day. Instead, the detectors will be used at random. Additionally, the devices are portable, which allows other schools in the district to use them.

In order to create an updated security plan, the district distributed three separate surveys to students, parents and teachers. From those surveys, officials learned that students believe there is more bullying going on in the schools.

Though a major incident hasn’t happened in the district, it is believed that bullying can lead to weapons being brought on campus. It is the hope of the district that the metal detectors will prevent a tragedy from occurring.
