Pennsylvania College Adapting CCTV Surveillance System

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – School administrators are implementing a plan to install surveillance cameras around Swarthmore College campus.

The plan calls for no more than 10 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to be installed around campus. School officials say this course of action was chosen as an alternative to hiring additional security staff who would incur higher costs due to salary, training, recruiting and benefits.

One CCTV camera will be posted in the school library to prevent theft. Currently, a security guard checks student belongings upon exiting the premises. Another camera is to be posted at the campus pool in the hopes of preventing accidental drownings. Other cameras will be posted in the school art gallery, a game room, a snack bar, a kitchen area and an office area.
