UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State’s President Amy Gutmann announced Jan. 22 that the school will spend an additional $5 million to improve security on and near the campus.
This increase will expand the budget for the university’s division of public safety by almost 22 percent (from $23 million to $28 million).
The $5 million will be used to expand the presence of uniformed and undercover officers, as well as purchase security equipment. The number of police officers deployed will increase by 20 percent, and the number of security guards will increase by 50 percent. As much as $3 million will be spent on improved lighting, security cameras and emergency phones.
