PCs Containing Vital Information Stolen at 2 Universities

PALO ALTO, Calif. and COLUMBIA, S.C. – Employees at Stanford University and the University of South Carolina (USC) have learned that computers containing their private information have been stolen. The cases are unrelated.

At Stanford University, a laptop containing personnel records of 72,000 current and past employees hired before September 2007 was stolen. The information on the computer includes Social Security numbers, salaries, birthdates, home addresses, business and home telephone numbers, Stanford employee numbers and Stanford ID numbers.

At USC, a desktop PC was stolen over the Memorial Day weekend from an office in the Moore School of Business.

The personal information of 7,000 students, as well as 130 faculty and staff, were on the computer. Campus officials informed those who were affected in a letter June 6.
