Patient Punches Doctor, Physician’s Assistant in Face

Published: March 6, 2013

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – A patient pried open a Dominican Hospital emergency room door and then punched a doctor and physician’s assistant in mid-February.

The incident has prompted doctors and nurses there to call for more security, reports the Mercury News.

The attack occurred Feb. 13 when the ER was full and patients were waiting. Matthew May, 23, who appeared to be disturbed, pried open the automatic doors at the ambulance entrance. He then punched the physician’s assistant and doctor in their faces. Nurses then helped to subdue May until a hospital security officer arrived on the scene and pepper-sprayed the patient.

As a result of the incident, the hospital is considering replacing the ambulance bay doors. Also, an unarmed officer now checks people in the waiting room to see if they have weapons.
