Part-Time Cop Charged in Christian College Shooting Incident

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — A part-time police officer has been charged with first-degree murder for his involvement in the shooting incident at Mid-Atlantic Christian University, which resulted in the death of a student.

Christopher Amyx, 23, told police that he shot Jonathan Schipper, a sophomore at the college, in self defense, reports WAVY.com. Amyx, who is an auxiliary officer for the Pinetops Police Department (PPD), allegedly shot the victim in the head with a semi-automatic .45-caliber handgun. The weapon is issued to all PPD police officers.

Amyx told another student that he had shot the victim and to call the authorities. During his interrogation, the suspect told police that he had been receiving numerous threats from unidentified sources prior to the incident.

Police found guns, bullets, loaded handgun magazines, a knife and two laptop computers when they searched Amyx’s room. The suspect has been placed on administrative leave from his duties with the PPD.
