Parent Volunteer Attacks 9-Year-Old Student With Hammer

Haseemah Diame faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon after she allegedly lured the nine-year-old student into a Lafayette Elementary bathroom before assaulting the girl with a hammer.

OAKLAND, Calif. – A parent volunteer at Lafayette Elementary School was arrested after she beat a third-grade student with a hammer inside a bathroom on campus on Friday.

Haseemah Diame faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon after she allegedly lured the nine-year-old student into a nearby bathroom before the attack. A school security guard and a teacher walked in during the attack and called the police, KTVU.com reports.

District officials said it was easy for Diame to access the campus, as she is very well-known and is a frequent volunteer.

Police are currently investigating a motive. District officials believe Diame had a connection with the victim’s family.

The victim was taken to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where she was said to be conscious and communicating despite the attack.

The Oakland Unified School District plans to increase security at Lafayette Elementary and discuss with students and parents how to assist the victim and her family.
