PHILLIPSBURG, Pa. – Reduced hours, safety concerns and disrespect from other employees have prompted security officers at St. Luke’s Hospital to consider joining a union.
Dwayne Phillips, organizing director for the International Union, Security, Police, Fire Professionals of America, says that the hospital cut the officers’ weekly hours from 40 to 36. Additionally, the administration reduced the number of guards on duty from three to one, which poses safety concerns when officers work with mental health patients, The Express-Times reports.
The decision will affect 16 part-time or full-time officers.
Security officers will vote on union membership by secret ballot before the end of the month.
