Ore. Teacher Can’t Take Firearm to Class

Published: November 12, 2007

PORTLAND, Ore. – A court decided Nov. 9 that an Oregon high school English teacher will not be allowed to carry her gun to school.

The teacher, Shirley Katz, said she needed to carry her Glock semi-automatic pistol to protect herself from her ex-husband. She had a legal permit to carry the weapon.

After the Medford School District informed her that carrying a gun was against the district’s policy, she sued the district.

Circuit Judge C. Philip Arnold concurred with the district stating that the employees know the school’s policy when accepting their positions.

Superintendent of the school district, Dr. Phil Long is pleased with the decision as well. He believed the case was a distraction from educating students.

However, pro-gun rights groups believe that Katz, as well as other teachers and students, should be able to carry a concealed weapon to school in order to protect themselves in lieu of the tragedies happening at campuses around the nation.

Katz and the Oregon Firearms Federation are discussing an appeal.
