Ore. House Passes College Police Agency Bill

SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon House approved a bill on June 14 that would allow public universities to establish their own police forces with authority and training similar to sworn police departments.

Senate Bill 405 was sent to Gov. John Kitzhaber without a floor debate, The Register-Guard reports. The University of Oregon (UO) was the driving force behind the bill, as the university has been looking to establish a more powerful police force.

UO recently phased out a contract with the Eugene Police Department. The school employs 35 peace officers in its Department of Public Safety, which operates on an annual budget of $4 million.
