COLUMBUS – Ohio State University administrators are considering adding 10 to 13 more officers to patrol the campus following a spike in crime at the institution.
An internal university study found that the number of police officers per students is the worst in all the Big Ten schools. The OSU police department is down roughly 12 officers, nearly a quarter of its current staff, 10tv.com reports.
To make up for the shortage, the department has pulled officers from patrolling University Hospital East.
Interestingly, OSUPD recently cut a deal with the Columbus Police Department to allow campus police officers to patrol off campus. However, the Fraternal Order of Police are now questioning why the department would want to extend its territory when it has trouble with staffing.
