In an attempt to improve energy efficiency, Toledo Public Schools in Ohio upgraded to LED lighting by Cree Inc. to illuminate the outside of 42 of its campuses.
The move delivers energy and light optimization while lowering the cost of ownership compared to alternatives, according to Cree. The company estimates the switch saves one school $355,000 in lifetime energy and maintenance costs while improving visibility.
TPS schools now use Cree LED area, canopy and wall mount luminaries. Cree’s OSQ Series LED area luminaries and CPY Series canopy luminaries light parking lots and entrances while Cree’s Edge Series and XSP Series Wall Pack illuminate campus walkways. The school system estimates the lighting system will reduce energy consumption by up to 69 percent.
Cree luminaires are also backed by a 10-year limited warranty, providing investment protection for TPS.
The school also used the upgrade to teach students about energy conservation by building an interactive dashboard that displays energy usage data. Using the dashboard students can monitor energy usage in real time and compete for the lowest energy usage.
