CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Adena Medical Center officials are considering creating its own police force to boost hospital security.
The hospital currently employs security guards to monitor the campus. If AMC officials decide to establish a police department, an eight-member, full-time certified police force would join the security guards in patrolling the hospital, The Chillicothe Gazette reports.
The police department would handle minor misdemeanor and misdemeanor cases. For felony incidents, the department would call on the local sheriff’s office for assistance.
AMC began improving security measures in 2012 after a man was able to walk through different parts of the facility and take several items, including medication. The incident prompted the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to threaten taking away reimbursement for Medicare patients for services at the hospital due to the hospital’s weak security procedures.
The medical center now has a sign-in procedure for visitors and has hired a security consulting firm.
