GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — The campus police force that patrols Ohio’s 10 mental health residential facilities will be eliminated next month.
State officials said that the specialized police force is no longer needed, as there is little criminal activity occurring at the facilities, WSAZ reports. However, some critics believe safety and security will be compromised, including Gallia County Sheriff Joe Browning. Browning says his department doesn’t have the manpower to pick up the slack after the force is eliminated.
Ohio will save more than $2 million over the next two years by eliminating the 30 mental health officers. The state will replace them with administrators to focus on residential abuse and neglect investigations.
