Ohio Dormitory Arsons Raise Concern

ATHENS, Ohio – Three recent fires at an Ohio University dormitory have been ruled as related arson incidents by campus police.

Within the last week, Martzolff House residence hall has seen two fires set in an elevator and another in a restroom in resulting in $1,000 in damages. “Crime alert” bulletins have been posted around campus in hopes they lead to tips. One arrest was made, but the suspect was released due to lack of evidence.

These incidents give particular rise to local officials since the Center for Campus Fire Safety reported Ohio’s 11 off-campus fire deaths are the most in the U.S. since 2000.
