The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund will release its annual Law Enforcement Officer Fatality Research Bulletin on Dec. 28. The report reflects a surge in officer deaths from 2009 to 2010. Prior to this period, officer fatalities were at their lowest since 1959.
Nearly 20 percent of officer shooting fatalities in 2010 occurred in just five incidents of ambush-style “cluster killings.” These types of killings – in which several officers are gunned down by the same offender – were on the rise in 2010.
As of Dec. 20, there were 154 officer fatalities. Motorcycle accidents and instances of officers being struck by vehicles also increased in 2010.
