LOS ANGELES — Occidental College faculty members voted they had “No Confidence” in Campus Attorney Carl Botterud and Dean of Students Barbara Avery for the way they’ve handled sexual assaults on campus on Monday, PolicyMic reports.
In April, civil rights attorney Gloria Allred filed a complaint with the Department of Education on behalf of 37 students who claimed the university discourages reporting of sex crimes and violates Title IX laws.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) also announced Wednesday that it would investigate the allegations that the college has failed to respond properly to sexual harassment and sexual violence on campus, according to the Huffington Post. During the investigation, OCR will look into claims that Occidental administrators retaliated against employees and students who advocated for new policies and procedures on sexual harassment and sexual violence.
Additionally, the college faces a complaint that it failed to comply with the Clery Act by not properly documenting sexual assault cases and issuing timely alerts to the campus. Currently, the Department of Education’s Clery Act compliance division has not announced whether it will investigate those claims.
