Under an executive order issued Dec. 1 by President Obama in the wake of the protests in Ferguson, Mo., the federal government will change how it distributes military-style equipment to state and local law enforcement agencies.
In addition, the administration has proposed a $75 million investment to purchase 50,000 body cameras for police officers as part of a plan to increase training for police and improve relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve, CBS News reports.
The proposal comes after a report from the White House found that federal programs for distributing military-grade equipment to police lacked structure and were unevenly implemented.
The report, ordered in August, followed the shooting death of Ferguson teen Michael Brown by a police officer that has sparked protests around the country.
