NEW YORK—The New York Police Department’s (NYPD) Internal Affairs Bureau found that Deputy Inspector Valentim Neves, who worked for the NYPD’s School Safety Division, lied under oath about having a sexual relationship with one of his subordinates.
Internal Affairs began investigating the case after Officer Robin Marable filed a federal lawsuit alleging that 53-year-old Neves discriminated against female officers that he was not having a physical relationship with, according to the Daily News. The investigation found that Neves and Officer Mareli Hnatko, 41, had in excess of 100 sexual encounters during business hours.
Neves initially denied having an affair with his subordinate; however, his wife, a retired NYPD sergeant, informed the Internal Affairs Bureau of the affair after the two got into a fight.
Additionally, Neves said that Assistant Chief Gerald Nelson also lied about having an affair with a school safety division underling after Nelson said Neves was seeing different women in the unit, according to a deposition in the Marable case.
For their part, Neves and Hnatko are facing dismissal for fraternization and false statements.
