NEW YORK — This winter, the New York Police Department made 327 arrests and handed out 555 summons at the city’s schools.
The data was released by the NYPD in compliance with the Student Safety Act, which was passed after complaints that officers were too quick to arrest students for minor infractions, The New York Times reports. The numbers in the recent report indicate a slight increase from the 279 students arrested between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011.
Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union said the data represented the “continuation of an alarming trend in the New York City public schools.”
