NYC Schools to Randomly Check For Weapons

Published: April 16, 2006

NEW YORK – Officials announced April 13 that New York City public school safety officers will now randomly search students for weapons.

Starting April 26, portable, walk-through metal detectors will be used to screen middle and high school students. Signs will inform students of the random checks when they occur on campus.

The move was prompted by this academic year’s 5-percent increase in the number of confiscated weapons. This year, 307 weapons have been confiscated. Twenty guns were among the weapons seized.

Currently, approximately a fifth of the schools regularly scan students.
