NEW YORK – Parent organization leaders across New York City have sued the Department of Education to overturn a ban on students carrying cell phones at school.
Parents of public school kids believe not having cell phones could pose potential safety issues.
Since April, schools have been seizing cell phones along with other devices such as iPods and Walkmen because students have been disrupting classes.
According to the New York Times, the Department of Education requested the ban because students have used cell phones to cheat, make drug deals and use camera phones in the locker rooms. Officials have collected 3,233 cell phones in about 20 schools.

Several independent schools allow cell phones as long as they are turned off.
