Nurses Go On Strike at Calif. Hospital

OAKLAND, Calif. — A five-day nurses’ strike began today at Children’s Hospital Oakland. Representatives of California Nurses Association-National Nurses United, which represents 750 registered nurses at the hospital, have been attempting to negotiate a new contract for almost a year.

 In the past, the hospital has paid the entire cost of healthcare premiums, the Contra Costa Times reports. The latest hospital proposal gives nurses the option of a Kaiser Permanente plan, a high-deductible PPO, and a PPO plan that would require nurses to pay nearly $4,000 a year.

Temporary nurses will be brought in and the hospital will remain open during the strike, which is scheduled to end at 7 a.m. on May 10.
