NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame has been fined $77,500 by the Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration in the death of a student. Declan Sullivan was killed when a hydraulic lift he was on was knocked over by 53 mph winds.
The school was also fined for failing to inspect the lifts as well as service the equipment correctly, and for failing have an operator’s manual on the lift, IrishCentral.com reports. The university must pay the fines, contest the charges or meet with state regulators on the matter by April.
Sullivan, who was working as a videographer, posted “Gusts of wind up to 60 mph today will be fun at work … I guess I’ve lived long enough,” to Twitter prior to the accident. He was filming a Notre Dame football practice from the lift.
To prevent future accidents, the university will be installing remote-controlled cameras at its outdoor field starting on March 23. Hydraulic lifts will no longer be used.
