Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Searching for New Chief of Police

NOVA, the second-largest community college in the U.S., is looking for a new Chief of Police to lead 53 sworn officers, six non-sworn security personnel, and six dispatchers.

ANNANDALE, Va. — Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), the second largest community college in the United States and the largest public education institution in Virginia, is currently searching for a new Chief of Police to lead its police department.

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Chief of Police provides leadership, strategic planning, and administrative direction for NOVA Police which consists of 53 sworn officers, six non-sworn security personnel, and six dispatchers. Essential job duties of the Chief of Police include:

  • Responsible for the operational management and administrative direction of a department within law enforcement and security services
  • Supports the mission and vision of the department and the College
  • Leads the strategic planning and staffing responsibilities for the Police Department
  • Provides coordination, guidance, and process management for senior management involved in services and programs delivered to the college community
  • Provides leadership and direction in policy development and implementation
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining partnerships throughout the College
  • Enforces state and federal laws and applicable policies of the College and the Virginia Community College System

The Chief of Police may be required to perform other duties as assigned and may be required to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Required qualifications are as follows:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in law enforcement, criminal justice, or closely related field or any appropriate combination of relevant education, work experience, and/or certifications
  • Extensive full-time experience in law enforcement
  • Supervisory law enforcement experience
  • Virginia law enforcement certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
  • Valid driver’s license
  • U.S. citizen

Preferred but not required qualifications include a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a closely related field, and experience as a lieutenant or comparable level.
