SUDBURY, Ontario, Canada – A day-old newborn baby girl who was taken from Sudbury Regional hospital was found 186 miles (300 kilometers) from her birth place.
Nineteen-year-old Brenda Batisse was arrested for kidnapping after police trailed her license plate to Kirkland Lake where she resides. According to authorities, Batisse was dressed in nurse attire. She is charged in connection with the abduction.
The infant was reported missing around 1:15 p.m., Nov. 1, and police issued an Amber Alert immediately. The child was found around 8:30 p.m. and was instantly sent to Kirkland Lake Hospital for medical evaluation. While she had bruising on her face as a result of her birth, she was said to be in good health.
Police were able to capture the suspect after viewing a surveillance video. At 12:33 p.m., the footage showed Batisse alone in the hospital. She was then seen cradling the 8 lbs., 11 oz. baby at 12:46 p.m. and then taking her out of the hospital. The family does not know the suspect.
Authorities alerted drugstores in the event Batisse stopped for formula or diapers. Roadblocks were also placed at exits of the city. Every vehicle was checked.
The hospital issued a code yellow alert, the alert for a missing patient, upon learning of the infant’s disappearance. Staff members united and searched the facility. The hospital was in lockdown mode.
This is not the first abduction for the area. In 1993, a five-day-old infant was taken from Joseph Brant Hospital by a nurse’s assistant trying to save her relationship with her boyfriend.
