New York Psychiatric Patient Died of Blood Clot, Autopsy Determines

Published: July 14, 2008

NEW YORK – A medical examiner has released the autopsy for the 49-year-old psychiatric patient who died June 18 on the emergency room floor at King’s County Hospital, after she was left unattended for an hour. The autopsy concluded that the woman died of blood clots due to a long period of inactivity.

The autopsy report was released July 11, and stated that Esmin Green died from pulmonary thromboemboli, blood clots that develop in the legs and move through the bloodstream to the lungs.

Green’s family, who is filing a lawsuit against the hospital, believes the amount of hours the patient sat in the hospital may have caused her death. Green had been sitting in the hospital waiting room for 24 hours before she died.
