New MySpace Restrictions To Shield Teens

Published: June 21, 2006

LONDON – MySpace will implement a new set of practices next week that are designed to protect teenage users.

The site will restrict how adult users can contact 14-year-old and 15-year-old MySpace customers. Those over the age of 18 still can contact these teenagers, but they will need to enter the teens’ real names or E-mails. Previously, adults were only required to enter the recipients’ user names. Minors contacting other minors will still only need to enter their user names.

Additionally, certain advertisements, such as adult dating services, will not be allowed on the site. Another change will allow all users to categorize their sites as private.

Despite these policy revisions, MySpace has no way of verifying if 14-year-olds and 15-year-olds are designating themselves as older.
