The Senate has approved a school misconduct measure that is expected to toughen and clarify state law concerning sexual misconduct by school employees. The bill, which was approved on March 3, will charge school employees (including bus drivers, janitors and teachers) with sexual misconduct if sexual relations occur with an enrolled student, even if that student is an adult between the ages of 18 and 21.
The bill was proposed in response to a recent court decision that found existing law to be unclear concerning teacher sexual misconduct with students between the ages of 16 and 20, according to The Seattle Times.
The measure is now being sent to the House for consideration.
