PENNINGTON, N.J. – The Hopewell Valley Regional School District has created eight new security positions for its six schools.

Central High School and Timberlane Middle School will each have two safety officers, and the district’s four elementary schools will get one each.

Seven of the eight positions have already been filled. The people hired thus far all have prior experience as police officers or firefighters.

They will be unarmed, and their uniform will consist of blue golf shirts with the district insignia. In addition to general security, they will also handle crisis planning and management.

According to officials, the district acted out of a general concern for safety rather than in response to any security or safety incident.
