New Jersey College IDs No Longer Use Social Security Numbers

RUTGERS, N.J. – A New Jersey law that bars universities from using Social Security numbers for student identification cards goes into effect Jan. 26. The law also prevents schools from publicly displaying these numbers.

Colleges currently using Social Security numbers will be required to assign new identification numbers and provide new cards to students.

Up until now, some universities, like Rutgers University, required that students use their Social Security numbers to sign in for exams. These identifiers also appeared on class rosters.
