On Wednesday, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson (R) signed into law an expanded concealed carry bill that increases the number of places where people with concealed-carry licenses can bring a concealed gun.

Under HB 1249, residents who get an additional eight hours of training  will be able to bring their guns into state institutions of higher education, stadiums, airports, and the Arkansas Capitol building, reports Yahoo Sports. Currently, guns are prohibited at those locations.

However, critics say HB 1249 is a really bad idea, particularly the part that allows guns into athletic events.

“Sometimes people have a little bit to drink before they go to the game,” Rep. Greg Leding (D) told Yahoo Sports. “I just think it’s a really dumb idea to introduce loaded weapons into that situation.”

The law goes into effect September 1, however, the Arkansas Senate is working to exempt stadiums from the law. On Thursday, the exemption was approved in a 22-10 vote. The bill now goes to the state’s House of Representatives.

Most states allow adults to carry concealed handguns without a permit or license. Since 2021 alone, 11 states have passed permitless carry, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Montana, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.
