Neighbors Sue Rowdy UC Berkeley Fraternities

Residents near UC Berkeley are suing dozens of the school’s fraternities for public urination, assaults and vandalism.

The neighbors have filed a lawsuit in the Alameda County Superior Court against more than 70 groups and property owners, reports the Contra Costa Times. The homeowners are contending the fraternities encourage underage drinking, loiter on sidewalks and streets, party all night and shoot pellet guns at residents.

According to the report, the suit is asking for unspecified damages and to cease the noise and destruction. The residents also asked for a restraining order to be placed against the fraternities, but Judge Frank Roesch rejected the proposal.

Stephen Fowler, an attorney for some of the fraternities, said it was unfair for the residents to blame the organizations for individuals’ behavior.
