Napolitano Visits Mo. Hospital Devastated by Tornado

JOPLIN, Mo. — U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Missouri Governor Jay Nixon toured St. John’s Mercy Hospital on June 9. The field hospital is being used until a temporary hospital can be built in its place.

The hospital facility was destroyed on May 22 by a tornado, KSPR reports. Federal funds are supporting the field hospital. Secretary Napolitano has pledged continuing funds to return St. John’s Mercy to full function in the coming months.

Physicians and other employees from St. John’s Mercy set up the 60-bed field hospital within a week of the tornado. On average, 130 patients a day are being treated there.
