N.Y. School Safety Agents: We Don’t Get Paid Enough Because We’re Women

NEW YORK — As many as 5,000 school safety agents in New York City have filed a class action suit, claiming that the city has violated the federal Equal Pay Act because the majority of school safety agents are female.

According to court documents, approximately 70% of school safety agents are women; however, they make 20% less than compared to special officers who perform similar work at hospitals and homeless shelters. Most special officers are male, according to SchoolBook.org.

The top pay for special officers is roughly $42,000 annually versus $35,000 for a school safety agent.
