PROVIDENCE, R.I. — More than 100 protesters shouted down New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly during his lecture Tuesday at Brown University.
Kelly was hosting the lecture titled “Proactive Policing in America’s Biggest City” when students and social justice activists began protesting the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy and its surveillance of Muslims. Despite Brown officials’ repeated requests for protestors to allow Kelly to speak, the shouting continued. Eventually the event was cancelled, the Associated Press reports.
Demonstrators said they originally petitioned the university to cancel the lecture, but when administrators failed to do so, students decided to protest during the event. University officials have voiced their disagreement with the protest, stating that they hope to convene a campus forum with Kelly to discuss important social issues.
